How to Get to a Job Interview in the Cold Weather

As the temperature falls, spending time outside can get a bit uncomfortable. Sub-freezing temperatures aren’t enjoyable to most, and they even impact how a person feels for some time after they get back indoors.

If you’re heading to an interview, spending an extended amount of time out in the cold before going in to meet a hiring manager isn’t ideal. It may prevent you from being at your best, particularly if you don’t have time to warm up before your interview begins.

However, for some job seekers, it may seem unavoidable. If you don’t have your own car, you might get stuck spending more time outside than you’d like. Luckily, there are options that can help you avoid some of the chill as you work your way toward your interview. Here are some worth exploring.

Public Transit

Public transportation can be a great option for candidates who live in larger cities. Often, buses and trains run fairly regularly during the day, and their schedules are set in advance. If there are convenient pickup and drop-off points, you can time your ride to align closely with your interview. While you may still have to spend a little time outside while getting to and from the station, it does limit how long you have to be outdoors.

Rideshare Apps

Even cities with only modest public transit options typically have a decent number of Uber and Lyft drivers around. While this may be more expensive than public transportation, it gives you the ability to arrange a pick up at your front door and a drop-off right where your interview is being held.

Plus, in some cities, you can schedule a pickup in advance. Just head to the app and let it know when you want a driver to arrive. That way, you know that you’ll have access to a driver at the proper time.

Friends and Family

If you have a friend or family member with a car who might be available to take you to an interview, it doesn’t hurt to ask for a ride. Just make sure you provide the person with plenty of notice, ideally asking as soon as you learn when your interview will take place.

With this approach, your ride to your interview may be free. However, you might want to offer to chip in for gas, especially if they are going to be driving for more than a few minutes.

Even if the friend or family member says “yes” to your request, you should also explore backup options. That way, if something unexpected occurs and your ride can’t make it, you have another approach that ensures you won’t miss your interview.

Rent a Vehicle

If your interview is a long way from your home or you simply want full control over your travel, renting a car might be your best option. You can pick up a vehicle the day before your interview and return it after the appointment, giving you the ability to travel right when you need to and even wait in a heated car if you arrive at your interview location too early.

While it is certainly more expensive to go this route, it is something you can do. As long as you have a valid driver’s license and meet the other requirements, such as being at least 20 years old (at least 18 in New York and Michigan) and passing a driving record check, you should be all set.

Ultimately, all of the options above can help a person without a vehicle get to a job interview during the cold weather months. If you’d like to learn more, the team at The Advance Group can help.
